Team Captains

Members of the team voted and the coaches conferred that the following have been named as summer captains: John Berrigan, Daniel Pericich, Van Schloegel, Charlie Smith. They will be asked to help organize: summer training, racing, communication, social events. We also plan to name a 5th captain near the end of summer from the many seniors on our roster. This will be based on summer effort and leadership.

Summer Training

We will begin our summer training on Wednesday, May 30. Team members have received a training packet with suggestions, etc. We will meet at the cell phone tower on campus at 7:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. Tuesdays and Fridays will be "workout" days where the effort will be higher. Summer training is voluntary and generally a captain or coach is there. We have seen lots of success stories start from making a consistent effort in summer training. Contact a coach or captain with questions.

Boulder Running Camp

We are set with our group to go to the Boulder running camp. If for some reason you have interest and haven't signed up - you can talk to Coach Dierks if there is any room.

Team Summit

What a blessing to meet with the returning XC team members and talk about the 2012 season. On behalf of the coaching staff, we are truly energized by your goals and your excitement. Please give us a few weeks to put together the goals. If you didn't attend, see Coach Dierks so you can complete your goal section of the evaluation. Special thanks to the Thompson family for opening up their home.

Track & Field

State Bound!

Congratulations to the 3 relay teams and senior Zach Herriott for qualifying for the state championships. At the sectional 4 meet, we had 9 entries, 4 qualified for state, 4 finished 5th (missing by 1 spot). Two relays were sectional champs: 4X800 and 4X100.

Parents and athletes who will be going to state have a mandatory meeting with administration on Tuesday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m. Location still to be announced. 1 parent and the team member must attend per school policy.

Let's ROCK STATE!

Summer Training & Camps

We have had a very successful season and in order to continue to build on this success we highly recommend that team members train, race and even attend camps in the summer. There are USA TF and AAU meets and teams of which to continue to compete. There are also many regional camps (MU, KU, KState) that have strong traditions in events. Please see a coach to talk about how you can continue to develop as a track & field athlete.

District Success

At the District 7 Championships in Belton, Mo. - the Hawklets competed with plenty of heart and courage finishing an impressive 2nd place (one of the top finishes in program history - need to do some research). 9 events qualified for the sectional championships. In field events: Jacob Benzer in the Pole Vault and Curtis Goldmon in the Long Jump. In the individual events: Zach Herriott in the 1600 and 3200, Kevin Jantsch and Alex Lombardo in the 800. 3 relays qualified (4x100 - 2nd); (4X400 - 2nd); (4X800 - 1st). Great job by all the competitors and coaches. A proud day for the program. More results will be posted later.

School record

Congratulations to the 4Xmile group of senior Ryan McAnany, junior Van Schloegel, junior Alex Lombardo, senior Zach Herriott for breaking the school record. They finished 3rd in the race and their time will be adjusted to 18:25.8 for the 4X1600 record.

KU Relays Win

Senior Zach Herriott raced to an impressive 3200 meter victory against many of the midwest's top distance runners. He ran a time of 9:17.12 in some windy conditions. Congratulations!

Rockhurst Relays

On Tuesady, April 24 we will host our home varsity meet. We have informed all team members that they will be expected to help or compete. All will remain throughout the entirety of the meet. Any parents who volunteered to help - thank you! Please coordinate with Scott Reagan, meet manager, if you have any questions. We are excited to host this meet and we know that all team members and families will be welcoming to our guests. The projected finish time is 7:45 p.m.

Some parent reminders

Parents - thanks for such great support. We are excited with the start of the season. Some competitive reminders:

1. No parent may show a competing athlete video of his performance (or a teammates) until the meet has concluded. This would be grounds for disqualification. I know that it is very easy to flip the screen around but this is a state rule.

2. Additionally, no parent should be on the field or inside the fencing unless they are working the meet. These areas are for warm-up and coaching. Please respect this space. We are trying to help student-athletes learn how to compete and stay focused.

3. Let's have a great push through this "middle part" of our season! For those track and field afficionados - a short drive to Lawrence will provide a great competition. Come on out and cheer on your Hawklets!
